A Serene English garden Editorial with Katie Julia at Somerley House
In Somerley, we let the tranquility of the grounds and the Period tastes of the property’s aesthetic shape the nature we chose to adorn tablescapes with; rich, colorful, velvety blooms in abundance.
We wanted these sprawling grounds and the historical facade of a perfectly preserved historic building to be the backdrop here; to layer their own centuries of history onto the story we are telling today. Unlike staged sets, Somerley is real - breath-taking at every angle, with no ‘behind the scenes’ to break the spell.
We were left in a dream-like between space as we strode the grounds, feeling we could be inhabiting any era. We were curating a vision which is very truthful to today - but were consciously positioning atop the many layers of history which exude from this incredible place, making a vision layered with all the stories which have come before.
Our senses have a way of taking us back to special memories, and enriching them in the most beautiful way. It’s magical.
We can still feel and hear the crunch of the gravel as we walked around the breathtaking Somerley House. We can still hear the sound of the birds chirruping in the trees above us; the blackbirds’ early warning that twilight was approaching. The calming burble of the water from the fountain that has stood here for so long. It all made our hearts sing as our senses took it all in. It all enriches the beautiful memories we have of this place.
The tranquility of an English garden and sprawling grounds is something to behold. The privilege of being free to wander, and take in the serenity of such surroundings, will be forever embedded in your memory, your heart and soul.
